feeding 3000 women & children

The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival has had 32 years to get things right...and, believe me, they have! For one week a year, these 650 acres are the most heavily-populated "city" in Oceana County in western Michigan. We have food, health care, garbage collection, recycling, childcare, a girls' camp & a boy's camp, recovery support, mass transit via wheelchair-accessible shuttle vans & tractor-pulled flatbed "buses". There are traffic controllers, security, and a communications headquarters.

As you can imagine, a VERY important part of it all is our three meals a day with vegetarian-friendly entries cooked over open-pit fires, locally-grown veggies & salad greens chopped by loving hands, and Michigan-fresh peaches and watermelons for dessert.

All of this is accomplished by the campers themselves, supported & organized by festival workers assigned to each area. For the MWMF is a cooperatively-run community in which each camper is expected to do two 4-hour workshifts if they're there for the entire week, or one shift if they only come for the weekend.

This is the way women would run the world.

Way to edit in the camera! The orange is so bright it's illuminating the womyn's faces...kinda cool! AND I love the smiles! Great shot.

Yes, the food was what I was after, so that's where I focused my camera. I didn't crop this photo afterwards because my intention had been clear in the taking. And Jessica is right. The food at fest always tastes delicious because it is made with love. All kitchen workshifts start by 60 women "umming" in a circle and being reminded that everything they do for the next four hours is for their sisters. Would that all restaurants operated this way!

Be cropping into the faces, you draw attention to the food instead. And that was your point here -- an incongruously large amount of shockingly bright orange carrots.
