We hiked today to Wapama Falls at the Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite. On the way back, this bear crossed our path just about 10 to 20 yards ahead of us.
Quoted fromhttp://www.sdnhm.org/fieldguide/mammals/ursu-ame.html : The black bear (Ursus americanus) is the only species of bear remaining in the state of California. The common name of the black bear is misleading. Though black bears east of the Mississippi are predominantly black, in the west various shades of black, brown, cinnamon, as well as blond pelage are common.

My understanding is that brown bears always have the right of way!
