Ghost Walls and other murals

Many of the signs in this gallery are what are called "Ghost Signs". Although many of these signs have now faded into oblivion, many are still visible. The term "ghost sign" has many layers like many of the signs themselves. The products they advertize are usually dead or defunct. They reappear or "materialize" after a rain and they sometimes appear after a fire or storm exposes a wall long hidden by another structure. The sign painters were known as "Wall Dogs" "Privilege signs were painted gratis in exchange for wall space and store owners were proud to have their names professionally done. Saloon walls sported tobacco and beer ads while grocer's walls tended toward staples. Soft drink signs lived in both worlds. By far, the best collection of Texas murals I have seen. We don't have nearly as many and we have several volunteer photographers. Many of these places are obscure little towns and some of the murals are in alleys. My hat is off to you, Wayne, I know you sweated to amass this collection. Well done! John Troesser, Editor at Texas Escapes I believe you have the Eunice, Louisiana mural listed as Eunice, Texas and a Bartlett mural as being in Granger, but that's small potatoes for such a large feast.
