Yes, the dangling rope is the key. Its danling also implies that the stability of the ladder can be fragile due to external forces.

It is not the ladder that grabs the imagination here -- it's that dangling rope. It is like a safety valve, hanging there, just in case! The shadow, rope, and ladder create a "leading line" that converges at the roof.
