The stately marble obelisk of the Philhellenes Monument dominates Philhellene Square (Plateia Filellinon) on the historic waterfront of Nafplio, Greece. Erected in 1903, the gray marble monument honors the French Philhellenes—including Marshal Maison, General Fabvier, and Admiral de Rigny—who fought and sacrificed themselves for Greek independence during the Revolution of 1821. Its decorative white marble medallion features a relief personifying Greece as Athena and France as Liberty. Looking past the fluttering national flags, the view sweeps upward to the formidable stone ramparts of the Palamidi Fortress capping the sheer cliffside in the background.
