The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia lies about 1 km southeast of the main Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. "Pronaia" means "before the temple," as it was the first major monument visitors encountered when approaching Delphi from the east. It was built as the gateway to Delphi to honor Athena as the guardian of the temple. The iconic circular Tholos of Delphi, a masterpiece of 4th-century BC classical architecture, can be seen on the upper right terrace. Three successive temples were built at this site, starting in 7th century BC. The entire sanctuary is closed for restoration during my visit in September, 2026.
