Located at the southwestern edge of the Acropolis, the Temple of Athena Nike was constructed entirely of fine Pentelic marble around 420 BC during the Peloponnesian War to honor Athena as the goddess of victory (Nike). The temple's Ionic columns frame its eastern porch and complete with their distinct scroll-like capitals, alongside the solid marble walls of its inner chamber (cella). Framed on the far left by a square pillar of the monumental Propylaea, the sanctuary overlooks a sweeping panoramic vista of modern Athens and the shimmering Saronic Gulf in the distance.
