Constructed between 437 and 432 BC by the architect Mnesikles under the administration of Pericles, this grand marble structure on the eastern face of the Propylaea served as the dramatic threshold separating the secular city from the sacred sanctuary precinct. The massive Doric columns support a heavy stone entablature.
