The Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, a Benedictine sanctuary, was officially founded in 1025 by Abbot Oliba on the jagged cliffs of the Montserrat mountain range. Composed primarily of a striking pink conglomerate rock, these vertical peaks were sculpted over millions of years by wind and water erosion to create an imposing natural fortress. It perched like a hidden sentinel at the top center of this picture.
