The striking modern monument known as the Stairway to Heaven (Escala de l'Enteniment or Stairway of Understanding) is located on a panoramic terrace near the monastery complex. Created by the acclaimed Catalan sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs in 1976, the nine-meter-tall stack of large concrete blocks spirals upwards to symbolize philosopher Ramon Llull's philosophical stages of creation and awareness. Set against a dramatic backdrop, the viewpoint overlooks the deep Llobregat River valley and the rolling, sunlit hills of the broader Catalan countryside.
