Built between 1737 and 1738 by French court architect Michael Leveilly in pink-and-white Rococo style, the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) is located on the bustling Marktplatz (Market Square). President John F. Kennedy made his “the capital of the free world” speech on its front stairs in 1963 to honor Bonn as the West German capital.
