The pilgrimage of the Japanese monk Kūkai in 805 AD to Qinglong Temple (Green Dragon Temple) in Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an) is one of the pivotal moments in East Asian Buddhist history. Kukai Daishi studied for two years in Qinglong Monastery under Master Huiguo, the supreme seventh patriarch of Esoteric Buddhism. Upon his return to Japan, Kukai Daishi establish the Shingon school of Buddhism in Japan.
