Designed in the 18th century by the French landscape architect Dominique Girard, a pupil of André Le Nôtre, who created the gardens of Versailles, the Parterre at Augustusburg Palace is considered one of the finest examples of a Baroque French formal garden in Europe. The formal garden south of the palace is laid out in strict geometric symmetry, featuring intricate embroidery-like flowerbeds. At the center of the main garden axis sits a large rectangular water basin, flanked by impressive fountains designed to create striking reflections of the palace's yellow Rococo facade.
