Completed in AD 1380 during the Ming Dynasty, four years before the nearby Bell Tower, the Drum Tower of Xi'an (鼓樓) was built to house a large drum that was beaten at dusk to mark the end of the day and signal the closing of the city gates. Standing about 34 meters (112 feet) high, the Drum Tower is larger than the Bell Tower. It is located at the northern entrance to Xi'an's vibrant Muslim Quarter.
