Château d'Hougoumont

view map

The Château d'Hougoumont served as the crucial anchor of the Anglo-Allied right flank during the Battle of Waterloo. Located in a shallow valley just 300 meters ahead of Wellington's defensive ridge. Napoleon committed roughly 14,000 French troops to capture the compound. It was stubbornly held by a garrison of only 3,000 to 6,000 Allied soldiers. At the end, the French failed to capture Hougoumont and contributed to their ultimate defeat.
