The Lion's Mound is a 41-meter-high (131 feet) artificial conical hill constructed to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. Commissioned in 1820 by King William I of the Netherlands, it stands on the battlefield in present-day Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium. The monument marks the presumed spot where the king's son, Prince William of Orange, was wounded in the shoulder by a musket ball during the fighting. A monumental 28-ton cast-iron lion sits on a stone pedestal at the summit but, unfortunately, was covered up for maintenance during my visit.
