With the spires of Notre-Dame Cathedral in the background, the equestrian statue to former Grand Duke William II (French: Guillaume II) stands in the center of Place Guillaume II, a square in the heart of the historic Ville Haute quarter. William II was the King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and Duke of Limburg from 1840 to 1849. At the time of taking this photo, Place Guillaume II is having Mäertchen (Little Market in Luxembourgish) with food stalls and fairground. This festival is held annually during the Octave period which begins on the third Saturday after Easter and ends on the fifth Sunday after Easter. The Octave period and its pilgrimage honor Our Lady of Luxembourg.
