William of Orange (1533–1584), often called William the Silent, was the leading political and military figure in the early stages of the Eighty Years’ War, the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain. He was assassinated in 1584 in Delft by a supporter of the Spanish crown. He was buried in the New Church in Delft. The monument on his tomb was originally very modest, but it was replaced in 1623 by a new one, made by Hendrik de Keyser and his son Pieter.
