Built in the 12th century, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore has maintained the original Romanesque Greek cross layout. However, the interior is a lavishly gilded Baroque explosion. Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of the Venetian Republic, was prominently carved above the central arch.
