When Kūkai prepared to establish his monastic community at Kōyasan, he was careful to enlist the support of the local deities to whom the mountain belonged. The Shinto shrine standing at the western end of the Danjō Garan is where these gods are now worshipped. The current buildings are reconstructions from the year 1594.
