The first construction of Osaka Castle was finished in 1597 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It was destroyed in 1615 after Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated Toyotomi Hideyori. A new Osaka Castle was completed in 1628 under Matsudaira Tadaaki. The tenshu was burnt down in 1660. The castle and its many buildings were destroyed during the Meiji Restoration. The current castle was the result of restoration effort in the 1990's.
