Built around 30 B.C., Masada is an ancient fortress in southern Israel’s Judean Desert. It's on a massive plateau rising over 400 m overlooking the Dead Sea. Nowadays a cable car carries visitors onto the fortress. Masada was the final holdout of Jewish rebels following the destruction of Jerusalem during the First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 AD).
