Frauenkirche and Blackened Ruins

Dresden, Germany

The original Baroque Lutheran church was built between 1726 and 1743. It collapsed on 15 Feburary, 1945, after the fire-bombing of Dresden by the British and US air forces. Reconstruction of the Frauenkirche began in January, 1993 and completed in 2005, in time for the 800th anniversity of the city of Dresden in 2006. The rebuilt church is a monument reminding people of its history and a symbol of hope and reconciliation.

More than 3,500 orginal stones were used in the reconstructed church. These original stones have a blackend exterior due to the fire.

One piece from of the original dome is displayed in front of the rebuilt church as a reminder of the history of the church.
