Red means "beautiful" in Russian. The name "Red Square" predates the communist era. This picture was taken from the middle of square facing northwest with Kremlin on the left and GUM on the right.
From left to right: Nicholas Tower, Corner Arsenal Tower, Historical Museum (the big red building), the Resurrection Gate (the shorter, red twin-tower structure), and the GUM (a huge department store complex).
