My father and the rest of the world were in the midst of the Great Depression. Dad was a struggling, unmarried young man with ambitions of becoming a famous cartoonist. This drawing says a lot about his state of mind. Note that he later scribbled another sketch on the same page. He was prolific in doing that. I envision that he was too poor to buy more paper. Note that he made a point of showing the holes in the soles of the young man’s shoes.
