For some reason this makes me think of the Battle of the Bulge. It was two years after this cartoon that the Germans sent a messenger to an American general suggesting that he surrender. He responded, "Ah nuts!" Was this a common expression in the early 1940's, or did General McAuliffe somehow see my father's cartoon?
