The mess hall (dining hall) and recreation area were together in one large room. As one entered the room from the main hallway, the rec area was just to the right of the dining area. We sat on cushioned seats while having meetings or watching movies. Movies on film were our major form of media, as there was no television, radio, internet, or personal computers. Other than recorded music we played in our personal areas, the movies were our only audiovisual entertainment. There was a movie being shown virtually every evening, and many, if not most of us spent a considerable amount of off-duty time in the rec room. On one occasion, a USO group gave us a singing and dancing performance in the rec area. That was a special treat!
