Most of the Town

Cold Bay, AK

This is another view of the town of Cold Bay in 1970. Our radar site was self-sufficient except for not having a landing strip and/or a dock. Cold Bay provided both. As a result, some of us met and befriended many non-Air Force people living there. The site commander, Lt. Colonel John Quirk, socialized with the people of Cold Bay to a great extent, not only because he so much enjoyed their company, but because he seemed to relish the lifestyle. He always appeared to be enjoying being there on a remote tour that some of the rest (not I) likened to a prison sentence. His positive attitude influenced how most of us at the site felt about being remote and separated from our families. As a young officer, I was beneficially influenced by John Quirk's approach to leadership.
