Near the Custis-Lee Mansion in what was once a rose garden, is a monument dedicated to the unknown soldiers of the Civil War. Dedicated in 1866, it stands atop a vault containing the remains of over 2,000 soldiers gathered from the fields of Bull Run and the surrounding area. In some cases, only bones or skulls were recovered, so it is likely the vault contains remains of Union and Confederate soldiers.
