The cliff dwellings that remain are Well-preserved, although some that are adjacent have totally fallen away. They were built by the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people around 1400 AD. Several Hopi clans trace their immigrants from here. When discovered by European-Americans around the time of the Civil War, they named them for the Aztec emperor of Mexico, Montezuma II because they wrongly believed he had ordered their construction.
