Bradford (born in 1590 England) was a religious reformist who had to leave England and the reach of the official Church of England. He and his congregation eventually decided to locate north of the Virginia Colony. They intended to land "some place about Hudson’s river" where they could be loyal to King James but free to practice their way of worship. Bradford was one of the leaders who planned what became the Mayflower voyage.
