In 1917 John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a summer resident of Mt. Desert Island, began building a 57-mile network of gravel paths for horse-drawn carriages. Rockefeller later donated most of the path network and another 11,000 acres of his land to the park. The carriage paths are still not open to cars.
