The Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation is located in War Memorial Park near the central business district. It was built in memory of the civilians massacred by the Japanese during WWII. The memorial is 70 meters high. The four vertical elements (sometimes referred to as the chopsticks) are joined at the base, representing unity among the four major ethnic groups -- Chinese, Indians, Malays, and others.
