Thalang village's Wat Phra Thong is steeped in legend. It is said that a boy tending the family rice paddy tied his water buffalo to a piece of golden metal in the soil. Feeling ill, the boy returned home and died. That night, the father dreamed he should go to the rice paddy to retrieve the forgotten water buffalo and unearth the metal. He discovered the hunk of metal was part of a life-sized Buddha head made of solid gold. By the time he had dug down to the chest he too fell ill and died. To this day no one has dared to dig farther. The solution: build the temple around the statue.
