This is my Apple MacBook Core 2 Duo. Not pretty huh? Not like the glamorous pics on the Apple website. It shouldn’t be like this. . Macs just work right? Yep, until of course, they don’t. This is the second Apple laptop I’ve had to take apart in the 6 years I’ve used them. The first, an iBook G4 blew its logic board, the rest was sold off as parts to fund this one. This one was an expensive machine. A new replacement even more so. While PCs get cheaper every year, Macs get more expensive. But as they’re now essentially the same as PCs you’d have to hope you’re getting better build quality. This one? Right lets see. Screen flicker issues pretty much from new. Plastics cracking, pretty much from new. Power supply failure. Screen backlight failure. Today I’ve fitted a new inverter board with no luck, so now it’s all apart to replace the inverter cable. If that doesn’t fix the problem, I’ll need a new screen, and if that’s not it, it’s the logic board again and a new laptop. The ‘affordable’ MacBook starts at ‘just’ £876. There’s no affordable’ or ‘just’ about it. That’s just plain expensive. A higher spec* Dell costs less than half that at £429, and LM’s 8 year old Dell lap top still works just fine. Though I love them, Macs are far too expensive. Even if I fix this one, regrettably, I might never buy another.
*bigger screen, faster processor, more memory, bigger hard drive, yep, that's bigger, better faster stronger...
