The 921 earthquake, also known as Jiji earthquake, was a 7.3 on Richter scale (the record was 7.6 by United States Geological Survey) which occurred at 01:47:12 am local time on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 (17:47:12 UTC on September 20) in Jiji. In Taipei City, far from the epicentre of the quake, buildings were shaken, but just one, the 12 stories Tunghsing Building, collapsed as a result of the tremor. 87 people died in the rubble of the building, which was later found to be unsoundly built, with structural pillars and beams stuffed with plastic bottles and newspaper instead of brick and concrete. Blame for the collapse was leveled by survivors at both the construction company which built the high-rise and local government for lax enforcement of building codes and safety standards. Five people were indicted in the wake of the disaster.
The original Native Taiwanese tribes traditionally practice nature worship. With the arrival of the Dutch in 1624, Protestant Christianity was introduced to Taiwanese via missionaries. The first converts were Indigenous Taiwanese. Two years later, with the arrival of the Spanish, Catholicism was introduced into Taiwan. The Japanese brought Shinto to Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period which began in 1895. Chinese migrants brought Buddhism, and Taoism with them to the island over a few centuries of immigration and settlement. The Japanese persecuted "foreign" religions in Taiwan during their rule, which resulted in Islam disappearing until it was reintroduced by the Kuomintang.
