Good Question! Specifically: March 1981
Most of the photos on this site were taken by one person: Me
I started shooting Black/and/White in late 1976 or early 1977
( I didn't date the original proof sheets)
I moved out of Venice at the end of 1987.
A few shots are from before those dates because I had been asked by friends to make copies from their own photos and I still have the copy negatives, but I believe those are all clearly marked. For example:
http://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/44783028 is a copied picture while all the pictures in: http://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/45050142 are mine.
I also have some earlier negatives from a guy named Rick Martin that I have scanned..

And some shots are obviously newer, For example:

Many of my shots are dated on the site. For example:
http://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/45992142 is dated while
http://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/46132096 is not
The word "scanpix" indicates that I scanned a print rather than a negative. I didn't start date-stamping my prints until sometime in the eighties so I couldn't date an early scanpix picture on the site without finding the corresponding negative, and there are maybe 20,000 negatives. I tried to carry along the date with any scanned negative, for example:

4515177 is the consecutive number that pbase assigns the pictures as they are uploaded.
00076 is the consecutive number that I give to the pictures as I scan them in.
30 is the original proof sheet number and 19 is the frame number on that sheet.
Aug 77 is the date of the original shot, though these earlier dates are approximate because I wasn't carefully dating my proof sheets when I first began,,,

The pictures on this page we among the six similiar shots I took in March of 1981, the proof sheet being dated 3/21/81 (but that would be the day I developed the film). Maybe one day I'll scan the negfatives, now that I know where they are! I should mention that I gave away literally thousands of prints back then and many people still have them. Tim's brother Kelly must have emailed me a scan of Tim's print which is why the other version is a bit discolored. I was sometimes a bit careless with the fixer. I probably printed up all six versions and gave away five to the guys in the shot and kept one for myself

Although venicepix is essentially a personal collection of photos, the fact that I gave away so many prints made this collection of pictures, in some ways, a shared experience even before I began posting them here...
