Dennis Agnew aka "Polar Bear"

Dennis is #7 on the Group picture. He was the best skater of our group and he was also a hell of a surfer. Since he already has a memorial gallery on this site I'm going to copy a few skating shots over to this one and then slowly fill it up over time.

When i first got out of prison bear gave me a place to stay and he designed a few tattoos that i never finished cause i was going to have him do it. He was awesome and inspiring to me. No i help run addiction treatment programs and have gained mt masters in social work. I have so many good amazing memories with the foos from Venice and Bear helped us kids alot back in the day RIP bro. @felon2phd

Dennis and I went out of and on for 5 fast and furious years, I believe him getting clean and turning his life around made me look at how screwed up I was. I got clean in 1994, now have 3 kids who are blessings, a Husband who has 18 years clean, a beautiful house and a career that I love. It took me moving away from Venice, but I owe alot to Dennis-he sometimes made me furious but he helped me change my life. Plus he was gifted and talented beyond belief, Nancy Deatherage (Berg)

THE BEAR LIVED DOWN THE STREET ON VENICE BLD NEAR MY HOUSE 1972 HE USED TO SEE ME GOING SURFING ALOT SO I ASKED HIM IF HE WOULD LIKE TO SURF WITH ME, HE TOOK ME UP ON IT AND ALWAYS WAS AND STILL IS A GREAT PERSON

Thank you Dave! (from Alicia his wife and Mother of his son, Christian) Bear always talked about what a great time you guys had on your trips!! He really wanted you to come to Kauai to lobster dive, etc.. You are so right, I am raising our son, we moved to Alabama to be closer to Dillon (his 1st son, now 14). When we are having fun, living our best life, I can hear and feel him, too...he had such a kind and fun spirit.

I felt the need to say something in my Friends behalf. I lived with Bear for a couple of years when he was doing Well. We were both Sober at the time, and I had the privilege to really get to know what a Kind, good hearted person he was. He was a person that was hardened from his life experience, because under all of that, all you had was a Kind Soul. I think that he got a sense of stability from me during those years. I was spending a lot of time in Cabo, or Mammoth at the time, and he would always say to me. "CAN I GO DAVEY, CAN I GO!" He would get really excited, like a little Kid. I brought him along with me on many of those trips, and we would Surf pefect waves, catch big Tuna, and ride deep Powder on the back side of 14. We would Rage Sober in Cabo, HIGH on Caffine all Night with the Girls! A few nights ago he came to me in a Dream, and I had the opportunity to shed tears with him, and tell him how much I really miss him. What a Fucked Up Loss for all of us. Rest in Peace my Sweet Brother! Your Friend Davey

There's a tribute bulletin board for Polar Bear at Bulldog Skates Here's what I wrote there: Dennis gave me my first real surf board. I was 30 and he was maybe 15? It was a small red pumpkin seed of a board. too small to float him and barely big enough to float me but a huge improvement over a board that I had found on the beach which unfortunately had to be drained for three days after only 20 minutes of "surfing".I rode that red board with a great deal of gratitude because I didn't have no money to buy no surfboard. I also rode it with a great deal of paranoia, especially when we went on the road, because it was easily identifyable ( it had a R.Crumb cartoon character--Mr.Natural-- on the bottom) and Dennis had let on that he "found it in a parking lot".Well... maybe....I didn't ask questions! But the point is that if I had almost nothing, Dennis had less than nothing. He could have sold it and maybe eaten better for a couple of days. I started taking pictures because it dawned on me that it might be the key to getting the locals to lighten up on all heckeling and harrassing they were aiming at Littlejohn and me, and it worked: Who's going to give a guy a hard time if that guy might possibly have a picture of you doing an off-the-lip at the south jetty? But that little red board meant more than just grudging tolerance.And it meant the world to me. Dennis always found little ways to show his appreciation for the pix I gave out... I've got a little Z sticker on my monitor that he gave me many moons ago, kinda beat up these days since it's been stuck and unstuck each time one of the things breaks down. I guess seeing it will be my way of thinking about him now and then. It's funny that somebody who wold have seemed to have so little to give could give so much...Thanks Dennis!
