Without going into a nationalistic debate King Matthias was a Hungarian King of an ethnic mix. His father was a Romanian (Janos Hunyadi the former governor of Hungary and mother a Hungarian (Erzsebet Szilagyi). He ruled during the second half of the XVth century (1458-1495?).

An otherwise very inspired and picturesque gallery is somewhat spoiled by a slight mistake as to the 'hungarian Hero'.Mattias Rex is in fact Matei Corvin,one of the Romanian kings of hungary,whereas the person on the bizarre looking Cluj statue being sung to by the huge figures at the bottom is Avram Iancu,who not only was 100% Romanian but was planted there by the ultra-nationalistic mayor of Cluj,Funar G (the very same one with the crazy idea to put the flag on park benches ,street lighting posts a.s.o.) so as to assert the Romanian hegemony over Cluj and ,implicitly,Transylvania.This antiquated approach with regards to life in Europe is no longer symbolic of Romania,Hungary or Europe as such and Funar and the likes of him have been out of sight for some time now,fortunately.
