Frigid winds from some of the world's largest non-polar icefields in the distant St. Elias Mountains sweep into this valley through a gap between slopes where trees can only grow in sheltered locations. Kluane National Park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site which includes Alaska's Wrangel-St. Elias and Glacier Bay National Parks, and British Columbia's Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park.
