RE #7: The thumbnail shows detail in the highlights of the buildings' surfaces. The buildings are the figure, if you will, the people are foreground, the subject is the narrow space. By lightening the people, they become the subject, more so because the buildings in the background have lost detail-- it's being suggested that we ignore them. The picture then is only about two people and we've lost the space. Some judicious dodging and/or some Curves work will bring back the mood you saw and felt in the thumbnail.
