Vic Cooke

Claridon, Ohio

I enjoy visiting and photographing the old country churches that reflect
the New England heritage brought here by the early settlers, together with
the distinctive modifications that characterize the so-called "Western Reserve"
design school that dominates the region. One such element is the "wedding cake"
or "stacked box" belfry design in lieu of a steeple . This example also reflects
a "Greek Revival" influence as seen in the classical pillar elements. This stately
example is the First Congregational Church in Claridon erected in 1831.
