Steve Case

Tacoma, WA.

It can help to think of different lighting for a subject. I had been here during the day while ships were at the terminals. But it just wasn't interesting. A very cluttered composition. So I checked the shipping schedule and found that there would be no ships today. Then went to the terminal for the night shot. This was my guess starting exposure and it turned out to be the best one. ( Of 12 ) Resized and USM.

Camera is pointed 310° magnetic, 330° true, close to NNW. Anybody need a navigator?
Have done several Pacific / Hawaii crossings. ( Racing sailboats )

Yes a tripod was used. There is no other way to take long exposures and get something usable. The camera must be held rigidly. Many tripods are not BTW. The distortion caused by a shaking camera can look like noise and poor focus. The ISO goes to 100 in Manual mode. Which helps. Letting the camera sit in the 28° F. for 30 minutes also helped.
Strike was a “lock out” technically. The containers are stacked 4 high on the docks. ( The maximum a straddle carrier can reach. ) There just isn’t enough equipment to move them with. The ship had left in the AM and another was due in on TUE.

This really is very good. It's so difficult to get a noiseless night shot like this (see my Miami at Night image for noise). This is excellent. I'd guess there were no ships around because of the West Coast longshoremans' strike/management lock-out.
Tripod, of course, right? --/\/\arshall

Extra points if you can guess which direction I am pointed!
