What a riveting subject! I think the snake closely resembles a Diamondback Water Snake, according to the Audubon Society Field Guide. It prefers to sun on logs and debris, and eats frequent meals of frogs and fish. It has teeth rather than fangs, and can aggressively and quickly bite, causing several lacerations. This water snake ranges from Texas to Indiana to Alabama; it can grow to 63" long. Many people misidentify this snake for a Cottonmouth.
