The Nikon with the scope gets out farther and isn't as "huge" in overall size as my Canon 600mm. Nevertheless, I think "Big Bertha" produces superior quality photos. Even so, I'm not unhappy with the Nikon/Zeiss combo. It's just a different way of doing things. Unfortunately, the scope has no IS. Thus, it is quite sensitive to the tiniest movement - including air movement while on a sturdy tripod.

You're getting to be quite the eagle photographer, Liz! Another fine one!
I see you've changed the approach to Nikon 4500 + spotting scope. More manageable than
the Canon with "Big Bertha?" I'm sure you'd still need a tripod, but it certainly
seems to work equally well.
