Salvaging whatever can be saved

Muisne, Esmeraldas, Ecuador

This is one of the many collapsed houses along the shore of the island of Muisne a couple days after
the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Immediately after the earthquake, the entire island was
evacuated for fear of a large tsunami. Unfortunately, thieves stayed behind and robbed whatever
remains that weren't destroyed by the earthquake. This is one of the poorest area of Ecuador, so
this is a double whammy for the already poor people.

As I walked the shoreline, I've seen many family members digging with their hands underneath the
rubble to see if they can salvage anything of value.

So sad. Cannot imagine what it's like to have so little and then lose even that.
