Some people would call that luck, but if you keep your camera with you at all times, it's easier to be lucky. Do you keep it on burst mode to help with subjects that may be moving?
In case you missed the subtle implication, it *is* an awesome picture.

Wow, what a brave little bird. The cat appears to be distracted by something else? I've seen a mouse and a cat taking care of each other once... I was very surpised then and am still now.

Thanks for all your comments. I don't think it's the bird that's overly brave, I think he knows this is pretty safe. Poor old Peaches is 15 years old, totally deaf, and fell off the roof about 6 months ago sustaining a spinal cord injury. She's a little discoordinated, can't hold her tail upright. She probably doesn't even know he's there.

I love that your kitty seems so oblivious to the fact that the bird is stealing it's food.... great catch Wendy... :)

Great shot Wendy! Somehow, I get the feeling that it is the bird who believes that it has 9 lives.

This bird is either really gutsy or really stupid. What a great shot, Wendy! The gruesome twosome!

(I wish mine were as disinterested in birds as Peaches seems to be) I agree: this is "poster" material --- GREAT shot!

Great photo Wendy! Having waited there for the chance makes it even better. You have to talk to your cat about stealing the bluejay's food though.

Definitely Poster material!!

Patience and persistence really paid off in this photo! So cool the way the kitty is looking the other way. Great shot!

Wendy - this is an absolute winner. How lucky you were to capture it.
