Kilkenny Castle, first built in 1192, occupies three sides of a quadrilateral;
the fourth side was demolished in 1659.
The expression "fighting like Kilkenny cats" derives from the longstanding
antipathy between the citizens of High Town (the castle and the English)
and Low Town (Irishtown). The city mascot is still the cat.
