Target Holder Pellet Trap

Here’s my low cost DIY portable target holder/backstop. It measures 30” square by 12½” deep (that’s 762mm square by 318mm deep) and sits on three feet so is stable on ground that isn’t perfectly flat.

I made it from scraps I had laying around, but I do need to finish if off with some 6mm MDF cladding for the top and sides which will set me back £10.

The pellet backstop consists of thick blankets (two wool and two very thick reinforced removal blankets) draped over steel rods which are hung in grooves on the top sides rails of the box: 8 layers in all. Should a pellet make it through all 8 layers, the backboard of the box is constructed from 18mm external ply.

Paper targets can be pegged to two fishing shockleader lines strung between nails (as in photo). We also hang chalk targets from the lines using solder ‘hooks’. Using kitchen towel as targets, pellet impact noise is negligible.
