The man of and in the moment, Steve Tokar, we called him "Swamp Fox" for awhile in his Art Squad days, somewhere I think I still have that button, "The Art Squad" Steve and the ideas, "Hey boys, lets' pull off a caper" Steve was an amazing painter, "let's size this thing up and smoke a Newpie" Short for a Newport. Study the view, Then the Question: "Could you live with this thing in your room?' Whatever it was, a painting a print, a sculpture. Steve really loved to see things, and Man O Man could he see. Thoughts of the Hudson Brothers, nicknames, "Cream Puff, Pig Pen, "My Name Is Howard Johnson" "Daft old boy" "Beatrice". I wonder if I'll ever meet someone who loved to: see, talk and experience art like Steve old boy. I'll never forget the first day I meet him. I've got to stop, but two last things about Steve, my life is better for having met him, and he had a knack of being able to talk to anyone, go anywhere, and discuss and learn from the conversation no matter the persons (who he was talking to station in life). Nothing like being in a studio with steve, watching the paint dry, "Here's to sizing up this thing" Steve, I'll forever remember you, and all the capers, Best Wishes, Peace and Blessings: to you old boy that you are at peace, and watching the paint dry in the "Stuuudio" and in God's gentle hands. It has been a year today since Steve Torkar passed away. He was a LOW KEY HIGH BROWc artist whose work will always stand up. Steve you will forever always be in hearts . I hope you are resting in peace my brother ! Gig Starr

I lived there from early 1987 through late 1988 on West 14th a few houses north of Clark with Baldy, the English guy, in Karl Brown's house. I knew his brother Keith Brown of Progressive Urban Real Estate, Bob Holcepl (a commercial photographer on West 11th), and Steve Torkar and his gf KL too. Steve and KL lived behind Miracles. Jeff Chiplis lived in the neighborhood too, and back then I used to hang at the old Friendly Tavern when Steve owned it. I just wondered where that over and under two family that was boarded-up was? Was it on West 11th behind Grace Hospital? It looks a lot like Kenny and Maria's old house. I was there for the 4th of July one year and a bottle rocket almost burned the neighborhood down. When I lived there we had a couple of music shows at Sindy's Tavern and the old South Side Tavern was open for a short time back then too.

Just wanted to say nice photos of Cleveland and Tremont. I used to know a bunch of people there in the art and music crowd, and over at Spaces too. A good friend of mine was a partner in a photo studio called Preston Allen Associates that was on the top floor of 2220 West Superior Viaduct in the late 1980s. After I got married in 1988 my wife and I bought a house off of Pearl and Biddulph where we lived until early 1991. I've been living around the Denver-area since then. I still have a few pieces of Tremont artwork from that era including stuff by L. Zink and Steve Torkar too, and some old photos of mine from various local industries too.

The building on the corner of West 11th and Friendly/Kenilworth, on the NE corner, used to be a bar/hall where the wedding breakfast scene from the Deer Hunter was filmed. For some time the commercial range from that building and movie was in our kitchen on West 14th.

Nice shots! It's been years since I last lived in Tremont and I was wondering what ever happened to the big old delapidated bathhouse across the street from Lincoln Park? Back about 13 years ago the roof was falling in and it was all boarded up. It was across the street from the park when facing south (away from the city w/ W14th on your right side). I heard it was turned into some sort of condos or something. Any idea or recent photos?

Love it!! My gr-gr-grandparents (Rauscher) lived where the Ukrainian Museum is now located in the late 1800s---came to the area about 1867. Their son, my gr-grandfather lived on Starkweather--was a locomotive engineer. The family of my Gr-gr-grandma from this branch (Elizabeth, maiden name Schneeberger) was instramental in the formation of Zion United Church of Christ. My other gr-gr-grandparents (Goebbels) lived, and operated a "saloon" from about 1870 to 1900 on Professor Avenue---where there is now an Am. Legion Post located. Know where I can get an old picture of what the saloon looked like before its front was "bricked" up? Had another set of gr-grandparents that first lived on Jefferson (in about 1884) before moving to St. Michael's Parish. As you can see, this area is very important to my family history. So glad the neighborhood is having such a wonderful turn-around---was a "gem" neglected for way too long!! ----------------------- Nancy
